COMMON: GROUND is our inaugural initiative, delivered with support from leading theatres and arts organisations across the UK.
It is a series of supportive, group discussions with a specific focus on research and identifying barriers linked to an artist’s socio-economic background in the UK theatre industry.
We partner with theatres in different areas of the UK to bring working-class artists in that region together, who are then offered a platform to share information about the barriers to career progression that they face when building careers in theatre.
We discuss the complexities of socio-economic barriers, and the multiple ways they can impact their career development. Artists are also asked to suggest what would help them overcome these barriers, which then act as the foundation for COMMON and the host venue(s) to begin a practical collaboration to address socio-economic inequalities in this region.
We do not deliver a COMMON: GROUND session as a one-off event. By committing to hosting one, the venue agrees to continue building a longer-term relationship with COMMON to support the community of artists who attend this event.
